If you are under the age of 30 than you will understand why I have done research about the gun violence epidemic in the United Sates. If you have grown up going to school in this country, then you know how children are primed to protect themselves in schools from potential school shooters.
I have been doing school shooter safety drills since Kindergarten and I listened to the Sandy Hook shooting happen over the radio. Sandy hook was the first school shooting I remember. But as I have grown up school shootings have become normalized. In 2023, there were 349 school shootings, with a slight drop to 232 school shootings in 2024. This is just data from the last couple of years but the statistics show that school shooting numbers have been increasing for over decade. This is mainly because of lack of regulations on guns and the ability to access automatic weapons.
School shootings have been normalized in America, and now kids are put through drills and trainings on how to survive a school shootings and the yet no one is surprised when another one happens. And it’s not just school shootings, gun violence is the #1 killer of people 18-25 years old.
Using Legislation, by regulating who can get a gun and the types of weapons that are accessible will help reduce the about of people that die from gun violence every year.
